Finding Journals in the Library

The Library has journals in both print and electronic formats. All journal titles regardless of format have a catalogue record. Please note that there are separate records for print and electronic formats of the same title.

To find articles on a particular topic across a number of journals, use an indexing database.

Tips for Searching the Library Catalogue

To find a particular journal select the Journal title begins with .... index and type in the exact title.

Note that there are separate records for print and electronic versions of the same title.

For print holdings, scroll to the red information at the bottom of the record. Click on Show items for information about specific volumes.

In the records for electronic versions there may be links to more than one source of the journal listed in the Web access section of the record.

The Subject keyword search can be used to search for journals in a particular subject area. Type in periodicals and subject words like sociology, social policy, criminology e.g. periodicals sociology

Keeping Up-to-Date

Here are some convenient ways of keeping up-to-date with journal articles being published on your subject:-

Sociological Abstracts and Social Sciences Citation Index enable you to set up automatic search alerts. Save your search on the database and when new records matching your search are added they will be emailed to you.

For key journals, go to the publisher's web site and set up a table-of-contents alert. Each time a new issue is published the table of contents will be emailed to you.

Please contact the Sociology Librarian if you would like help with creating an effective search strategy for your automatic alert.
