Graded Readers

Readers are arranged on the shelves by their reading level which ranges from Shared to Secondary. 'Colour Wheel' readers range from Emergent to Fluency.

Guided Reading (some teacher support required) books start at Green and Independent Reading (no teacher support) at Orange.

To find a reader, first find the level or colour, e.g. DB, F++ on the shelves, then, within that, find the following letters, e.g. DB FLY SMI. The readers are not shelved in Dewey order so check the shelf ends for the levels rather than following the numbers.

What are School Journals?

The School Journal is a magazine-style series in four parts for children from years 3-8. The publication has two main uses, as a magazine that children can read for their own interest and enjoyment, and as a classroom resource, used in the teaching of reading, social studies, science, and other subjects. It is published in graded parts and contains material appropriate to the interests and experiences of these age groups:

  • Part One: 7- to 8-year-olds
  • Part Two: 8- to 9-year-olds
  • Part Three: 9- to 11-year-olds
  • Part Four: 11- to 13-year-olds

Other publications

Junior Journal: 6- to 7-year-olds

School Journal Story Library: 9-14 year olds who need assistance with reading

Journal of Young People’s Writing

Journal of Secondary Students’ Writing

Choices: These are intended to be used by secondary school students in years 9 - 10 who have difficulty reading in English at high school levels, or to motivate reluctant readers. They are designed to appeal to the interests of teenage readers.

Connected: Connected is another magazine for New Zealand schoolchildren, which aims to foster an interest in mathematics, science, and technology and help children to understand that they encounter mathematics, science, and technology in their everyday life. It is also has graded parts:

  • Connected 1: 7- to 8-year-olds
  • Connected 2: 8- to 9-year olds
  • Connected 3: 9- to 11-year olds
