Maori Place Names

Translations / Whakapākehātanga

To find a quick translation or definition:

Start with the dictionaries of Māori place names. In the Education Library these are at 919.3 in the Reference section or in the Māori Collection on the ground floor.

Explanations / Whakamāramatanga

To get more meaning or to find places not in the dictionaries search the catalogue to find books with more information. Books on place names, regional or iwi histories and legends may all contain useful information:

Place names / Ngā ingoa-a-rohe

Search the catalogue under ‘keywords anywhere’, with maori names

  • scroll through the list looking for books on your area/place, or
  • narrow your search by putting in a region, e.g. maori names canterbury

Regional and iwi histories / Ngā kōrero-a-rohe

Search the catalogue under ‘keywords anywhere’ using the words maori history and the name of the region or iwi, e.g. maori history fiordland Note:If you don’t get many results, try a broader region, e.g. Marlborough rather than Blenheim. Legends / Ngā pakiwaitara
