EndNote X8 for MAC OS X

EndNote X8 for Windows

The current version is EndNote X8. Once you have installed the download from this page you will get automatic prompts when updates are available. You will be asked for your UC login.

Additional Files

The Library provides some modified and additional Filters, Connection, and Styles files which are useful for this University.

Note that any zipped files need to be 'unzipped' i.e. right-click and choose the extract command.

These instructions refer to installation of EndNote X8 on your own PC or laptop – they assume Windows 7 or Later.  Mac users should consult the information about using EndNote on a Mac. Ensure any earlier versions of EndNote are removed before installation of X8.

Our Endnote licence requires you to remove the Endnote software from your PC if you cease to be a student or staff member of UC.

Using Office

EndNote X8 is compatible with Office 2016 and earlier.  See the EndNote site for up-to-date details on compatibilities.

Step 1: Install the Software

  1. Go to Endnote Files.
  2. Run the right install file for your operating system e.g. UC_EndnoteX8.exe. for Windows.
  3. Follow the EndNote Installation instructions

Step 2: Install the additional Filters, Connection Files and Output Styles

The Library provides some modified and additional Filters, Connection files, and Styles which are useful for this University. What are Styles, Filters and Connections? An example of a connector you may want is one that allows direct, although limited, searching of the UC Library Catalogue (this connector is called U Canterbury.enz).

Once EndNote is loaded you will need to copy these files to your laptop or PC.

  1. In the file that you downloaded, there will be a folder called UC_Styles which contains sub-folders for each of filters, styles, and connection files. Alternatively, you can download these from the 'Additional Files' box on the left of this guide. Note that any zipped files need to be 'unzipped' i.e. right-click and choose the extract command.
  2. Locate the Filters, Connections and Styles folders on your computer (these folders should have been created during the EndNote installation process). To locate them go to EndNote > Edit > Preferences > Folder Locations:

    EndNote Preferences

  3. The folder names may be different on your PC. This screenshot shows a Windows 7 version where the defaults have not been changed. If nothing shows in these folders, you can either create folders for them, or copy the files into the appropriate folders directly under C:\Program Files (x86)\EndNote X8 - but in this case you will have to re-copy the files if you ever upgrade.
  4. Extract the compressed Filters, Connections and Styles into these folders.
