Journals are published regularly (monthly or quarterly). They publish the latest academic research and are usually peer-reviewed or refereed. The articles have been reviewed to ensure there are no mistakes in the methodology or reasoning.

Steps for effective database searching:
1.Search using the key concepts in your topic.
2. Consider alternative terms - consider the range of different terminology that authors might use when writing about the concepts in your topic. Take into account synonyms and related terms, spelling variations, plurals of words.
3. Use truncation to find alternative word endings - on most databases you can use an asterisk (*) at the end of a word stem to locate alternative endings, e.g. victim* to find victim, victims, victimology etc.
4. Combine your terms - Use AND or OR to combine your search terms. AND - to find articles that contain all terms. Use an OR between synonyms.
5. When you find an article that looks useful, look at the subjects or keywords assigned to the article for other ideas to try.
