Finding Music Books

Music and books about Music are shelved on Level 6. We use the Library of Congress classification system for arrangement. The relevant sequence is M - MT.

Every item in the Library has a unique call number which can be found by using the Library Catalogue.

Books which are in high demand for particular courses are held on Restricted Loan. To see the list for your course, type the course code into the Course code search in the Library Catalogue, eg MUSI 131

    Chamber Music

    The following titles are useful for the analysis of Chamber Music:

    Cohn, Arthur. The literature of chamber music. 4 vol.
    Very useful when writing programme notes for recitals.

    Cobbett, Walter Willson. Cyclopedic Survey of Chamber Music. 3 vol.
    A descriptive guide to works for 3 to 9 solo instruments and non-piano duets, with musical and historical analysis presented in an informal style.

    Newman, William S. The Sonata in the Baroque Era.
    Newman, William S The Sonata in the Classic Era.
    Newman, William S The Sonata Since Beethoven.
    This set, presenting a "history of the sonata idea," offers detailed descriptions and stylistic characteristics of piano and chamber sonatas.

    Loft, Abram. Violin and Keyboard: The Duo Repertoire.2 vol.
    Expansive and detailed information about the composers and descriptions and analyses of their works in this genre. Vol.1 surveys the 17th Century to Mozart, and vol.2 covers Beethoven to the present.

    Ulrich, Homer. Chamber Music: The Growth & Practice of an intimate Art.
