Research Workshops and Training: Data Handling

Outlines for the workshops and training offered for student and staff researchers at the University of Canterbury.

Get your data in shape

This half day workshop looks at techniques for messy and tidy data.  There are many good ways to use spreadsheets - and some real pitfalls too.  The first half of this workshop looks at tidy data in spreadsheets.  The second looks at Open Refine, an open source tool for making sense of messy data, and getting it ready to analyse.

This workshop can be delivered for a specific research group, or for a non homogenous group.  It can be tailored for Biology, Digital Humanities, Geography, and a number of other disciplines.

The Carpentries

This workshop uses modules taken from the Carpentries; a community effort that develops and teaches workshops on the fundamental data skills needed to conduct research. Their mission is to provide researchers high-quality, domain-specific training covering the full lifecycle of data-driven research.
