Daniel Hook is CEO at Digital Science. He was a co-founder of Symplectic, one of Digital Science’s first portfolio companies and has served as Director of Research Metrics and interim COO of Figshare. Daniel was a PhD student in Theoretical Physics at Imperial College London before he joined Digital Science and continues to play an active role in theoretical physics research. His interests include PT-Symmetric quantum theory, quantum statistical mechanics and complex network theory.
Virginia Barbour is a professor at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Australia, and serves as the Director of the Australasian Open Access Strategy Group. She is best known for being one of the three founding editors of PLOS Medicine, and her various roles in championing the open access movement. She has also served as a chair of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) for two terms (2012-2015; 2015-2017).
Sarah Townsend is Senior Policy Advisor at MBIE.
She works with the Chief Scientist and the Departmental Science Advisors to provide scientific leadership and stewardship of the sector, building a high level picture of linkages, gaps and opportunities and making sure that scientific knowledge is drawn into the policy process and development of investment plans.
Alex Hanlon, UC’s Executive Director of Learning Resources, is responsible for the management and development of the University’s libraries, information technology services and the University’s estate, including Capital Works property and infrastructure.
Jane Maidment is a Professor in the School of Language, Social & Political Sciences at UC. Her main areas of teaching, research and publication have focused on field education and practice skills teaching and learning; ageing; and using craft as a vehicle for promoting social connectedness wellbeing.
Joanna Cobley is the Researcher Development Coordinator in Research & Innovation at UC. She has two main research areas. The first relates to research as a practice, where she is interested in exploring 'identity mapping' and how to develop research impact profiles. The second area is concerned with heritage, history & folklore, which involves research about food as a cultural practice and sensory experience.
Philip Schluter is a Professor in the School of Health Sciences at UC. His research is largely epidemiological in nature, driven by a social justice perspective. Student supervisions and publications have largely focused on population inequity, forming an evidence base to inform important health policies. Many peer-reviewed journal articles explicitly deal with the social determinants of health, often embedded in local contexts but motivated by national or international public health priority areas seeking to reduce health inequalities.
Hamish Osborne is the Customer Success Manager for Dropbox based in Sydney. Hamish has an Honours Degree in Ancient History from Macquarie University. Dropbox is used by millions of education users in A/NZ, and Hamish is interested in how open collaboration platforms enable University research teams.
Anne Harvey is the Managing Director for Digital Science Asia Pacific with an overall responsibility of supporting clients with their research management objectives. She has been involved in a number of projects including Big Data Computing and Australia’s ERA (research assessment exercise) in 2012 and 2010.
Kathy Christian is CEO of Altmetric, a Digital Science company, after originally joining as COO. Kathy completed her MBA at London Business School and worked in drug development for 9 years.
Felipe Ayora is Cloud Solution Architect at Microsoft, based in New Zealand. He has a computer science degree from Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico.
Ted Glynn is an Emeritus Professor in Te Kura Toi Tangata (Faculty of Education) at the University of Waikato, and an elected Fellow of Te Apārangi (the Royal Society of New Zealand). He has researched and published widely in the fields of educational psychology (applied behaviour analysis), early bilingual literacy learning (Māori and English), inclusive education and culturally responsive and relationships-based pedagogy. Throughout his research Ted has positioned himself as a respectful colleague rather than an outside expert.
Angus Macfarlane is Professor of Māori Research and Director of the Māori Research Laboratory Te Rū Rangahau at UC. His research focuses on exploring Indigenous and sociocultural imperatives that influence education and psychology. He has had a transformative impact on sociocultural theory and research practice in the context of educational challenges experienced by Māori.
Dr Anthony Dona is currently employed as a Solution Consultant by Clarivate Analytics (formerly Thomson Reuters - IP & Science) to inform and direct universities and academic institutions across Australasia on best practices when measuring the impact of novel research from existing resources and databases. He has a PhD from the University of Sydney in Biochemistry and continues to drive novel medically based research through an honorary position with University of Sydney.
Dr Auda Eltahla is Research Engagement Manager for Microsoft, based in Sydney. In this role he helps universities, institutions, researchers and research software engineers achieve more using the cloud. Dr Eltahla has a PhD in Molecular Virology from UNSW and is skilled in cloud computing, genomics, bioinformatics, molecular virology and immunology.
Philippa Martin is a Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at UC. Her current research interests include multilevel coding, error correction coding, iterative decoding and equalization, space-time coding and detection, cognitive radio, massive MIMO, smart grid and cooperative communications in particular for wireless communications.
Jorge Gomes is an associate professor at the Lisbon School of Economics and Management, University of Lisbon, Portugal. He conducts research in the fields of procedural perspective in HRM, creativity, leadership, and culture.
Moira Fraser is the Project Lead for the Library at UC. She is currently leading two Open Access projects at University of Canterbury’s library. The first is a NZ universities collaborative project on Open Access and she also leads the University of Canterbury Open Access initiative. She has a wealth of experience in managing collaborative projects and in advocacy.
Arin Basu is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Health Sciences at UC. His primary research includes clinical medicine, education, environmental health, epidemiology, health services research, information technology, & interdisciplinary research related to these disciplines.

Giulio Dalla Riva is a Lecturer in Data Science in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at UC. His research focuses on the interplay between interaction processes (such as ecological or cultural networks) and evolutionary processes.
Arron Patterson is Principal Engineer & Chief Technology Officer Lead - Commercial, Asia Pacific & Japan for Dell EMC, based in Auckland. He is responsible for ensuring customers and partners view Dell EMC as a strategic technology provider that is relevant to their Digital transformation & Cloud Journey. Arron helped to establish, articulate and communicate the company’s technical vision and strategic direction by interacting with the various business, research and development teams within Dell EMC and presenting at conferences and events.
Ekant Veer is an Associate Professor in Management, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship at UC. His primary areas of interest include the use of marketing technologies & advertising to encourage social change and the role that consumption patterns play in developing consumer identity.
Elizabeth Hopkins is Acting Commercial Director at Research & Innovation at UC. She is a specialist in scientific commercialisation and pharmaceutical and biotechnology management, and is a member of MBIE’s Science Board and the Investment Committee of Kiwinet. After training as a research biologist at Oxford University Elizabeth held senior executive positions with several prominent biotechnology companies in New Zealand and overseas.
Jonathan Dunn is a Lecturer in Linguistics at UC specializing in computational linguistics. He is currently working to model language variation and change on a global scale. Jonathan is also interested in data-driven language mapping (earthlings.io).
Luka Topic works for Dell EMC, based in New Zealand, where he leads Unstructured Data Solutions. He has been involved in Enterprise IT for more than 13 years, from point of view of infrastructure and data centre architecture. Digital transformation is one of his biggest interests, specifically applications of Big Data and IoT technologies in business use cases i.e. the exciting new world of unstructured data.
Fiona Tyson is an Education Subject Librarian at UC. As well as supporting Education students and researchers, she leads the UC Library Facebook and Twitter platforms and recently co-authored an article with her colleagues Anton Angelo, Brian McElwaine and Kiera Tauro on delivering information literacy via Facebook.

Chris Cormack is Technical Lead Koha Team at Catalyst IT in Wellington. He has a BSc in Computer Science and a BA in Mathematics and Māori Studies. He was the lead developer of the original version of Koha, an open source, fully featured, scalable library management system, and believes in Free Software and allowing users the freedom to innovate.
