It is a known compatibility issue on M1 Apple Silicon Macs with the new Universal Microsoft Word. Basically the issue is that the Word add-in "Cite while you write" does not launch in the Universal Apple Silicon Microsoft Word version. Clarivate needs to update the plug-in for native compatibility.
The work-around is :
Go to Finder-Applications-Microsoft Word. Right-click Microsoft Word, choose "Get Info" and check the box "Open Using Rosetta." This forces Microsoft Word to launch as an Intel program and restores compatibility with the Endnote Plugin
Microsoft Word EndNote bar is Greyed out.
On M2 MACs if the Microsoft Word EndNote Bar appears but is greyed out with EndNote 20 or EndNote 21 Turn off Rosetta.
Quit Word and EndNote. Go to Finder-Applications-Microsoft Word. Right-click Microsoft Word, choose "Get Info" and uncheck the box "Open Using Rosetta." Restart you MAC.
Sometimes during the install process EndNote online can be selected in the Word Application over EndNote.
Click on the EndNote toolbar -> Preferences -> Applications -> EndNote -> OK
This will restore EndNote as the default application for Word.
